10 famous IIT-Bombay graduates who held positions of power


Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are a popular destination for engineering students who want to be successful in life. Many large companies and organizations are also ready to hire IITians and these IITians have also been successful in the chosen fields and made India proud.

From young entrepreneurs to many unconventional people, here is a list of famous IIT-Bombay graduates who have held positions of power.

1. Parag Agrawal: new CEO of Twitter

Parag Agrawal is the new CEO of Twitter. He studied at IIT-Bombay after being admitted to Stanford University to pursue a doctorate in computer science.

He got 77e rank in the IIT-JEE exams. He joined Twitter in 2011 as a software engineer. He was also appointed Chief Technology Officer in October 2017.

He also took managerial powers at Microsoft Research and Yahoo Research.

2. K Sivan: President of ISRO

Kailasavadivoo Sivan, K Sivan, is also known as “Rocket Mani” for his outstanding contribution to the development of cryogenic engines for the Indian space program.

He graduated from Madras Institute of Technology in Aeronautical Engineering in 1980. He obtained his Masters in Aerospace Engineering from IISc, Bangalore in 1982. He also obtained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from IIT, Bombay in 2006.

He contributed his efforts to the Chandrayaan 2 mission. He also contributed significantly to the design of the PSLV, GSLV and GSLV Mk-III vehicles.

3. Nandan Nilekani: Non-executive Chairman, Infosys

Nandan Nilekani is an entrepreneur and one of the famous alumni of IIT-Bombay.

He is one of the founding members of Infosys, which was established in 1981 and of which he is the non-executive chairman of a large organization.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT-Bombay. In 2009-13, he was president of UIDAI, the issuing authority of Aadhar.

4. Bhavish Aggarwal: Co-founder of Ola cabs

Bhavish Aggarwal graduated in Computer Engineering from IIT-Bombay in 2008. He started his career at Microsoft. In January, he co-founded Ola cabs with Ankit Bhati in Bengaluru.

He was also one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people.

5. Vipul Goyal: Indian comedian

Vipul is one of the best artists and comedians in India. It has also been featured in the web series called “Hourly Yours”.

He studied electrical engineering at IIT-Bombay. He is also one of the best alumni of IIT-Bombay.

6. Parul Gupta: co-founder and president of Springboard

Parul Gupta graduated from IIT Bombay in Electrical Engineering. She worked as a board member of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association.

She works as the president of Springboard, a platform that encourages learning and offers an alternative to the education system.

7. Sarita Adve: professor at the University of Illinois

Sarita Adve completed a BTech in Electrical Engineering at IIT-Bombay in 1987.

She is known for her contributions to memory consistency models for multiprocessors, memory system performance, hardware reliability, and power management, among others.

8.Jairam Ramesh: member of the Rajya Sabha

Jairam Ramesh is an economist and active politician for the Congress Political Party. He is a member of Parliament representing the state of Karnataka.

He completed his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay.

He was appointed Minister of Rural Development and Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation from 2011 to 2014.

He took office as MP for Karnataka on July 1st, 2016. He also provides strategic policy and advice on environmentally friendly technologies for developing countries to a United Nations agency.

9. Manohar Parikar: former Minister of Defense of India

The late Manohar Parikar was also a former student of IIT-Bombay. He completed his metallurgical engineering at IIT-Bombay in 1978.

He was four times Chief Minister of Goa and former Minister of Defense of India. He died at age 63 after battling a prolonged illness.

10. Nitesh Tiwari: Indian director

Nitesh Tiwari is a screenwriter and director. He obtained a BTech degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Bombay.

He is known for his films such as Dangal, Chillar Party, among others.
