A local group sent over 300,000 free books to children in Terrebonne through Dolly Parton’s Imagination library


The Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence has taken a new step: the non-profit organization paid more than 300,000 pounds for children in the region through the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Since 2012, all registered children of the parish of Terrebonne aged 0 to 5 have received a new book each month delivered to their home at no cost to their family. Currently, more than 3,300 local children are registered, while 7,442 other children have already participated.

Local businesses, organizations and individuals donated to help pay the cost.

The number of books distributed now stands at 307,001.

“These books continue to have a tremendous impact on our community by increasing the literacy skills, social skills and understanding of our children,” said Ashlee Barahona, Executive Director of the foundation. “Thanks to the generosity of our community, so many children have been introduced to the love of reading from an early age.

Country music superstar Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library in 1995 and has established itself in the United States and abroad.
