Bloomington author publishes children’s books on managing emotions

BLOOMINGTON (Heart of Illinois ABC) – Described as a way to “find a middle ground,” a Bloomington author has published a series of children’s books to help families deal with their children’s emotions.

JJ Shegog is co-owner of ‘Jair’s Collections’ – a publishing house that focuses its work on the importance of social-emotional learning.

Shegog taught kindergarten and first grade in Chicago, and says a common problem she noticed with her young students was that they had trouble controlling their emotions and maintaining good mental health.

This inspired her to write several books about the different ways children can cope.

“Understanding your emotions, understanding your role in other people’s emotions, and understanding how you can handle those situations — those tricky relationships,” Shegog said when asked about social-emotional learning. “When you learn how you feel and how you feel, you’re more likely to be able to communicate what your needs are, they can communicate what their needs are, and you can find a middle ground.”

The business is named after Shegog’s three-year-old son, Jair. She says raising it taught her new concepts to add to her books.
