Author to talk about “The Secret History of Food

Is Italian olive oil really Italian or do we dip our bread in lamp oil? Why are we masochistically drawn to foods that can hurt us, like hot peppers? Is classic American apple pie really… English?

Matt Siegel, author of “The Secret History of Food,” will speak on these topics and more at 7 p.m. on September 8 as part of the Copperfield’s Books event series.

“As a species, we are wired to be obsessed with food,” said Siegel, who, during the writing of the book, set out to “uncover the hidden side of everything we put in our mouths.” .

Siegel also explores topics ranging from the myths – and realities – of food as an aphrodisiac to the role of food in fairy tales and morality. He even presents a well-argued argument for how ice cream helped defeat the Nazis.

Siegel has written on food and culture for publications such as The Atlantic, Fast Company, and The Paris Review.

The speech is free. To book: Copperfieldsbooks.com and click on Events.
