EB Vickers inspires young writers at Canyon View Writer’s Guild

Elaine Braithwaite Vickers (EB Vickers) wows her readers with her first young adult book and third novel, Fadeaway. This YA novel has a cast of characters and a plot that leaves you in awe. Fadeaway explores various themes by merging the perspectives of its characters, Jake, Daphne, Seth, Luke and Kolt.

These characters are believable and adorable; The story is gripping and timely captures real-life issues that cripple today’s youth. Vickers’ exploration of perfectionism and addiction makes these topics comfortable rather than covered up. When the last page is read and the book is closed, the reader is saddened to say goodbye to the characters who have become friends. Fadeaway is awesome!

Fadeaway, although a fictional work, is loosely based on Vickers’ great uncle Wilbur Braithwaite, who finds himself center stage as “Coach B.” Braithwaite coached high school basketball and tennis in his hometown of Manti, Utah. Braithwaite won a dozen championships as a coach, but he was also a poet and philosopher. Braithwaite the coach, the philosopher and the poet all find their way on the pages of Fadeaway.

Fadeaway and Vickers kicked off the Canyon View High School Writers Guild’s inaugural event. Vickers shared the power of a story in front of a crowd of fifty of the best CV Falcons. By sharing her journey of becoming an author, she encouraged students to see themselves as authors too.

The Writers’ Guild is an brainchild of the English department at Canyon View High School. The ‘flex’ period at CVHS not only allows students a period of remediation, but it also provides the opportunity for enriching experiences such as the Writers’ Guild.

The Writers’ Guild will continue with bi-monthly writing workshops and other author visits over the next school year. These workshops will be facilitated by the English department of CV. Each English teacher will share their own area of expertise with the guild. These include: creative fiction, poetry, journalism, and blogging.

Vickers is an award-winning author of medium quality picture books including Like Magic and Paper Chains. She graduated from Cedar High School and holds a doctorate in chemistry. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Southern Utah University. She and her husband Robbie are the parents of three wonderful teenagers, Jack, Halle and Lucy. Vickers books can be found wherever the books are sold, and signed copies of Fadeaway can be purchased from Bulloch Drug. Would you like to attend a workshop led by Vickers?
