Hanging KKK Flag Next to Black Family House “Sadly” Not a Crime, Prosecutor Says

GROSSE POINTE PARK, MI – A Michigan prosecutor has refused to press charges against a man who displayed a Ku Klux Klan flag in a window facing a black family’s home while condemning the action as “despicable, traumatic and totally unacceptable, ”reports The Associated Press.

The act, “unfortunately,” does not violate state law, said Wayne County District Attorney Kym Worthy, who is black. She encouraged the state legislature to revise or create laws to protect citizens from this type of “horrible conduct,” according to the report. As the laws are drafted, a charge of ethnic intimidation would require physical contact, property damage or threats of such activities, she said.

About two weeks ago, the KKK flag was hung in a house next to that of JeDonna Dinges, 57, in Grosse Pointe Park, AP reports. The flag was placed right in front of his dining room.

Neighbors claimed they couldn’t afford a curtain and were using the flag as a substitute, City Manager Nick Sizeland told reporters last week. City police have replaced the flag with large fabrics, AP reports.

Dinges received community support during a march and rally, AP reports. Before the flag incident, she found a full gas can in her outdoor recycling bin.

“There is absolutely no doubt that what happened to Ms Dinges was despicable, traumatic and utterly unacceptable,” Worthy said. “But, very unfortunately in my opinion, it is not a crime. The KKK flag, while intending to be visible to Ms Dinges, hung inside her neighbor’s house.

The klan was a secret society organized in the South after the Civil War to assert white supremacy, often using violence, reports AP.
