Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike plays Moiraine, a character who at first glance seems a little different from the roles she’s famous for, such as Missing girl and A private war. But, according to Pike, it was the complex nature of Aes Sedai’s character that drew her to the role.
âRobert Jordan was very interesting in that he was able to write women with real courage,â Pike says. “Women, which I learned from the fandom who wrote letters to me, have inspired a lot of men and I think this is quite unusual.”
Pike, who describes his role as “delicious,” attributes Moiraine’s “hidden reserves of depth” to the character’s decades-long fascination with the character, as well as his seemingly limitless determination to do what is right for humanity.
âShe’s a woman with a purpose,â Pike explains. âI think his commitment to his cause is almost – there is an almost religious zeal. It comes at the cost of everything else and it’s a kind of commitment that I really admire.
Moiraine isn’t the only fascinating female character on The wheel of time canvas – now or in the seasons to come. Pike enthusiastically points out that âthere are so many amazing female characters to comeâ in the show’s second season, which has already been given the green light and is currently in production.
âI mean, Moraine is a great character,â Pike laughs. “Corn [in] our second season we’re shooting now – there’s lots and lots of other fantastic, interesting, complex, mysterious, you know, all kinds of female adjectives, [who run the gamut] from innocence to experience.
