Libraries invite authors to talk about diversity

Three local libraries will host a virtual tour with authors Dr Carolyn B. Helsel and Dr Yvette Joy Harris-Smith at 7:30 pm on Monday June 14th.

Helsel and Harris-Smith will discuss their book, “The ABCs of Diversity: Helping Kids (and Ourselves!) Embrace Our Differences,” and have a conversation on how to teach children how to be champions of diversity.

The book offers tips to help parents, teachers, and caregivers of children and adolescents navigate differences discussions so they can raise people engaged in respectful civic engagement.

“We are proud to provide a forum with these diversity experts to our clients, recognizing that initiating diversity conversations with children can seem daunting,” said Mary Smith, Head of Youth Services at Mount Prospect Public Library.

“The work of Drs. Helsel and Harris-Smith enables parents to invite their children to participate in these conversations.”

The authors will offer tips, ranging from the initial treatment of anxiety and fear of presenting information correctly, to how to organize and network with others to educate your family and community about the issue. diversity.

A question-and-answer session with the audience will follow the 45-minute presentation.

Presented in partnership with Aurora, Mount Prospect and Villa Park Public Libraries, the event will take place virtually via Zoom.

Registration is required by calling one of the partner libraries or visiting their websites. To register, visit bit.ly/ABCdiversity.
