It costs more and takes longer to draw unattractive characters
Why are characters in manga and light novels almost always conventionally attractive? Light novel author Takenoko offered a response on his Twitter Account Sunday: According to an illustrator acquaintance with whom they spoke, âuglyâ characters cost more to draw.
Takenoko stressed that it is not a question of artistic competence; the worlds of manga and illustrator are teeming with artists capable of drawing unattractive characters. It’s more about efficiency because the elderly and the unattractive people need more lines to draw. They also said that the other major reason these types of characters don’t appear more often is that there just isn’t a lot of demand for them. Takenoko explained that there is beauty in simplicity: it is very difficult and takes a long time to draw art that looks âuglyâ while remaining true to basic art techniques.
Takenoko went on to describe that when it comes to drawing “overweight” characters, although it is possible to add flesh to their jaws to easily express their size, it is still a matter of. simplification which makes the character more attractive than a truly “realistic” drawing. Therefore, it is easier to convey the differences between the characters by focusing on clothing and accessories rather than unconventional body shapes and appearances.
Takenoko is the author of Online Genocide: Gokuaku ReijÅ no Play Nikki (“Genocide Online: The Heinous Lady’s Play Log”). They started serializing the story on the “ShÅsetsuka ni NarÅ” (Let’s Become Novelists) website from November 2018. BK Books began publishing the series in print form in June 2019.
