Literacy Achieves is hosting a children’s book drive on Saturday, and their goal is to collect and distribute 5,000 new and lightly used books for children in their programs. The non-profit organization strives to equip non-English speaking adults and their young children with English literacy and life skills to promote independence and general well-being.
The book drive is in conjunction with the âRace to 500,000 Booksâ campaign currently hosted by another non-profit organization, Race to Kindness. The biggest effort was started by Orion Jean, an 11-year-old from Fort Worth who says his generation sees the problems happening in the world and wants to do something about them.
âI can’t do it myself and I don’t want to. I want to have the support of people across the country, âsays Jean. âStudies show that kids who have books at home do better than kids without books. So I know that books have changed my life and changed the lives of so many other children around the world.
Literacy Achieves will be hosting a bookmark station and other activities for kids on Saturday. Books will be distributed directly to families during the event.
If you would like to help, books can be dropped off at Literacy Achieves’ Vickery Meadow Campus, 6329 Ridgecrest, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Ideal selections would be a variety of fiction and non-fiction aimed at ages 0-5. You can also donate online here.
