LU teacher publishes second children’s book

The Curious Pup is the namesake of a growing children’s book series written by Cheryl Rae Johnson, professor of English at Lamar University. The second book in the series was released in January and is available on Amazon.

The series focuses on Christianity and teaches child-friendly lessons on topics such as going to the doctor and finding accommodation.

The books are part of the accelerated reading program, which means that students can read them and take a test on them at school for points.

But the lifelong dog taught the Johnson family as many lessons as the wide-eyed Benny did in the books.

The real Bentley was adopted into the Johnson family eight years ago, quickly becoming the best friend of Johnson’s daughter Holly.

Holly, who is also featured alongside Benny on the show, was battling depression and anxiety as a teenager when the dog’s calming and quirky presence brightened her life.

“She was experiencing a bit more depression and anxiety than a normal teenager,” Johnson said. “So we were looking for avenues and different ways to help her… and I started talking to her about the possibility of letting her take a dog that she chose.”

Bentley came along.

Check back Thursday at 11 a.m. to find out how Bentley has changed the lives of their family.
