Marshall Memo: Families Receive ‘Honored Patriots of Marshall County’ Book | News, Sports, Jobs

A military book titled “Honored Patriots of Marshall County – 1861-2019” was presented to several people in attendance at the bimonthly Marshall County Commission meeting.

Some of those who received books were family members of people whose military history was in the book, while others were people who were somehow involved in the publication of the book. . The preface, prepared by Thomas O. James, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, reads in part:

“This volume has been assembled to coincide with the unveiling of the newly erected Remembrance Tablets at Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, located at the northeast corner of the Marshall County Courthouse.

James dedicated the volume to a good friend and mentor, Joseph D. Parriott, noting that Parriott’s confidence and knowledge of Marshall County history had enriched life.

Thanks listed by James included Marshall County Commissioners John Gruzinskas, Scott Varner and Michael T. Ferro, commission administrator Betsy Wilson Frohnapfel, members of the Gruzinskas Veterans Memorial Committee, Bill Harris, Parriott and James Stultz . With special thanks to Linda Cunningham Fluharty, Marshall County Historian and Civil War Archivist and host of www.lindapages.com

A total of 462 soldiers were described in the book. In addition to individual information, there were 140 soldier badges, hats, and lapel badges.

There will be several Memorial Day services in Marshall County on Monday May 31st.

The Moundsville service will be at 11 a.m. at the Veteran’s Plaza at the Marshall County Courthouse. The names of veterans who died in the past year will be read.

The Glen Dale Memorial Day service will begin at 11 a.m. The guest speaker will be Marshall County Magistrate Zach Allman. Glen Dale resident and boy scout Kaden Minth will be honored to have received his Eagle Scout Award.

The Marshall County Gold Star Family Committee recently received a check for $ 8,179.50, which becomes the final amount needed for the Gold Star monument on the lawn of the Palace of justice.

The monument was dedicated to all families in Marshall County who lost someone who served the army in peace or in wartime.

Overall, $ 65,000 in donations were received for this business.

Last October, Hershel “Wooded” Williams came to Marshall County for the dedication of the monument.

Williams is the last World War II Medal of Honor recipient still living in West Virginia. He has directed these monuments across the United States.

Five months ago, Appalachian Power Co. and Wheeling Power Co. submitted an application to the West Virginia Civil Service Commission for certification of public convenience and necessity for the internal modification of their coal-fired plants which are necessary to comply with federal environmental regulations. These changes will allow the Marshall County plant to remain open after 2028.

The Marshall County Commission has been working behind the scenes since the request was submitted to support companies in hopes of increasing the possibility of the PSC approving the request, thus giving AEP the ability to keep the Mitchell factory d AEP in Marshall County operational until at least 2040. .

The PSC’s public comment hearing is scheduled for videoconference on June 2.

As for the Mitchell plant, the commissioners said: “There is no doubt that the closure of AEP’s Mitchell plant would have a negative impact on Marshall County. Marshall County would see a significant reduction in the tax base, both real and personal, but the loss of over 200 direct jobs and an immeasurable amount of ancillary jobs.

Monarch Stadium will be open to the public from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in June and July for those who wish to use athletics.

If you haven’t donated to the 6th Annual Marshall County FRN “Hunger does not take a summer vacation” Community wide virtual food drive, you have until May 31 to do so.

Last year $ 10,000 was donated, and that same number was the target, however, the current number is somewhere in the $ 5,000 range.

The food drive will benefit some 15 local organizations and assistance programs, namely pantries, soup kitchens, etc.

Donations are accepted online or by mail. The address is FRN at 1501 Second Street, Moundsville, WV26041 (please indicate “Food drive” in the memo line by sending a check.

The Marshall County Commission last week signed a sale agreement to purchase the Moundsville Journal Office, with closing to occur within 90 days.

Frohnapfel said very preliminary discussions have focused on what will happen to the building adjacent to the Marshall County Health Department. She added that the health department building needed additional space to meet current safety regulations.

The county is currently using part of the Journal building as a temporary election storage room.

As for the two buildings, the Health Department building was built in 1955 while the Journal building was built in 1910.

The Journal building was my “second house” for 61 years.

One of the main factors for the Journal was its location because in addition to the health department next door, the courthouse was across the street and then just down the street is the library, the building from the city, the prison, the Grave Creek Mound. , all within walking distance.

I came across a copy of the front page of the June 29, 1946 edition of The Journal last week, and it turns out that the biggest story of the day was that the Journal and the Wheeling News-Register would consolidate. The previous evening there had been a dinner meeting at the Kreglow Hotel at which local officials and representatives of the Journal were present to make the announcement.
