Naver Webtoon and Munpia Host Billion-Won Web Novel Contest

Naver Webtoon and Munpia, a web novel platform, are on the hunt for the next big web novels, or novels published online, with 1 billion won in prizes.

The two companies announced on Thursday that their web novel competition will open on May 11 with two rounds: the first round for fantasy, action, modern, sports and alternative history via Munpia and the second round for works by romance and fantasy romance via Naver Webtoon.

Organizers said the prize money is the largest in South Korea for a web novel competition and they aim to cement their leadership position in the genre which has seen rapid growth in recent years.

This is the first joint effort from the two companies, after Naver Webtoon became Munpia’s largest shareholder in February. Naver Webtoon owns a 56.26% stake in Munpia as of April 4.

Munpia is one of Korea’s largest web fiction platforms, with some 63,000 registered writers. Naver Series is a paid service that provides webtoons and web novels services.
