WCSD Superintendent defends district’s decision to drop mask requirements for younger students
By Lucia Starbuck

Washoe County School District officials are defending the decision to drop mask requirements for young students.

District officials announced earlier this week that students aged 9 and under no longer need to wear masks; however, educators and staff said the advice they received from the district was unclear.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Superintendent Kristen McNeill said the decision to drop mask requirements was driven by the district’s high vaccination rate among employees.

“We were able to work with our health district and have our employees vaccinated at this level. And so, the circumstances have changed dramatically, as I’m sure you understand, from the beginning of March 2020, when the schools closed, to where we are now. And it’s a good thing things are on a positive trend, ”McNeill said.

Officially, students under the age of 9 no longer need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors, but they are still required to wear one on buses. All other students and district staff are required to wear headgear except at recess, lunch, or PE.

The CDC recommends that all students continue to wear face protection for at least the remainder of this school year.

Although patients are limited to two visitors at a time, the new rule eliminates the daily visitor cap. The limits were initially put in place to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

In a statement, hospital officials said the decision was based on high levels of staff immunizations and lower hospitalizations related to COVID-19.

Despite the county’s relatively high COVID-19 parameters, many businesses in the region have regained full capacity.
