The store, he said, “responds to my desire to be part of imparting knowledge to others. It is certainly not necessary for us to take advantage of it.

Funiciello chooses the new books from the overstock of Powell’s Books, a Chicago book wholesaler. Used books come from his own collection and from people who bring them back by box, either to donate or for modest store credit.

New books sell for used book prices – a quarter of the retail price – and used books at garage sale prices. With used books, he searches for them online, Funiciello said, finds the lowest price, then subtracts a dollar from shipping.

Physical attraction

Martuscello has been selling vinyl records for about 10 years, since a friend gave him a record player. Before opening the store, he made deals with cafes in Scotia, Albany and Troy, as well as Rock Hill, and displayed a few cases of albums in each location. Now his focus is entirely on the Glens Falls store.

“The physical will never go away – touch it, the sight will never go away,” he said.

Even so, he called the market for people who own and use record players “ridiculously small”, and he scoffed at the idea of vinyl making a comeback – something he’s heard from. people say every year for the past decade.
