Riverbend Open first night in the books

GODFREY – New name, successful start.

The first night of the new Riverbend Open tennis tournament was a success, according to tournament director Jesse Macias.

The tournament was formerly known as the Alton Closed Tournament.

Alton, Marquette Catholic, Roxana, Jersey, Civic Memorial and Triad players and alumni, along with other schools and even a few coaches, competed in the doubles championships on Monday at Alton High School.

The tournament continues at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Alton High courts.

“We’ve had a few crowned champions tonight and there will be more tomorrow,” said Macias. “There were some great games all night long and all the finals (Tuesday) should be competitive.”

The last game of the evening ended at 10 a.m. on Monday and it was perhaps the best game of the session.

“We had three very good college players,” Macias said. (Adam Ruckman, Baker University; Zach Plocher, Greenville University; and Matt Lehr, Greenville University) and a booming high school player (Parker Mayhew) and the points were incredible. “

In Monday’s final, Alton High’s Ellie Enos and Jenna Fassler defeated Alton High’s Lauren Massey and Finley Haynes 8-5 in the girls under-14 division.

In the boys under 18, Parker Mayhew and Xavier Carter of Alton High defeated Zach Wargo and Ethan Porter of Jersey 9-7.

Jersey sophomores Emma and Libby McCormick finished first in girls under 16.

On Tuesday, Alton’s Katie Saenz and Anna Brady take on Jerseyville’s Elise Noble and Tessa Crawford to determine second place.

The men’s open and the women’s open have two rounds to play on Tuesday. Laura Moore (Marquette Catholic / Lewis and Clark Community College) and her partner Ashton Tewell (Jerseyville / LCCC) are 2-0 in the women’s open division.

Lydia Criveau (Alton) and Mariah Schillinger (Civic Memorial) face Lindsey Ratliff and Stephanie Kamp of Roxana for the Under-18 Championship.

Jack Carmody, the Triad’s head boys tennis coach, and his daughter Jocelyn, who plays No. 1 in the Knights, are in the Mixed Open final. They play Sarah Kreutzrager (Roxana / LCCC) and her partner Zach Plocher for the first time.

“We had coaches from Triad, Roxana, Civic Memorial and Alton playing in the tournament,” said Macias, “and I think their players enjoyed watching them and cheering them on. That’s part of what makes this tournament special.
