Student of the month talks about civil rights, think tanks and novels

BETHEL – When Telstar and the Rotary Club awarded Gabrielle Thompson the October freshman, they praised her as a silent leader.

But Thompson contributes to the role in more ways than detailed in the writing. For starters, she has been playing football since second year, in defense. She plays for Telstar High School under the direction of Coach Scott.

“[I] really liked my trainer. And [that’s] made it much more enjoyable. I just like the way we train. He makes it fun, ”says Thompson.

Thompson also enjoys reading. Her favorite types of books are fantasy / magical realism novels. Although she doesn’t have a favorite novel because there are too many of them, she is currently reading a fantasy novel called The Grace Year.

“I’m only a few pages away,” says Thompson. “Once [the] girls turn 16, they have to be sent for a year because they get magical powers and stuff.

She is also a member of the Telstar Civil Rights team. They stand up for under-represented voices and speak out on their behalf. One of the team’s recent events was a welcome day. Maine has a wheel with different colors, and each color represents a specific group; green represents disabilities; light blue or dark blue are gender expression and identity; religion is represented by purple.

For the welcome day, the members of the civil rights team all dressed in one color and, “all of these different colors just show that everyone is welcome to school,” concludes Thompson.

Thompson also thinks creatively when it comes to his schoolwork.

“We’re doing this project called Think Tank, and you’re with a bunch of people. I’m with two other people, ”says Thompson. “It’s like a playoff, a shark pool where you have this global problem, and then you have to create a product for it.”

“I’m not really sure what’s going to happen when we present the real problem… we go to a panel of sophomores and they’ve given you similar feedback,” said Thompson.

“She’s a quiet leader, a good role model in the classroom and a great member of the team,” says Thompson’s article by Telstar and the Rotatory Club after winning the Freshman of the Month in the know.
