Superintendent Carlton contract extended | Pine log

The Carlton School Board unanimously approved an extension of its CEO’s contract at its meeting on Tuesday, February 16.

Superintendent John Engstrom signed an initial contract with the district in June 2020 following the departure of former Superintendent Gwen Carman to take over the Lewiston-Altura School District.

Engstrom’s new contract includes a 0.5% pay rise when it goes into effect – about $ 540 more in 2021-22 – and includes five additional days of vacation. In addition, the contract removes the acting label from his job title.

Engstrom was originally hired on a one-year acting contract in July 2020 as Carlton and Wrenshall worked on a consolidation deal. However, the necessary legislation did not gain the approval of the Minnesota Legislature, and boards of directors disagreed on the issue of debt sharing.

Leaders from both boards recently agreed to suspend consolidation talks while each side explores alternative options for the future of their school districts.

Previously, Engstrom was superintendent of the Friess Lake School District in Washington County, Wisconsin. Engstrom retired following a merger between Friess Lake and the neighboring school district of Richfield.
