The success of Williams Station Day in the books – The Atmore Advance

Another Williams Station Day is in the books.

Last Saturday dawned a perfect day for the city’s annual festival of the same name on Pensacola Avenue.

Over 70 people took part in the Atmore Community Hospital 5K Breast Cancer Awareness Run / Walk, and soon after, the festivities began.

Mayor Jim Staff read the proclamation naming the town of Atmore by its namesake for one day; the Boy Scouts helped hoist the flag; and a moving rendition of “The National Anthem” was sung.

From the start it was obvious that there would be a lot of people at Williams Station Day.

A regular crowd passed through the streets, visiting various vendors who were selling their wares.

In the middle of the morning, Hope Lassiter, director of the Atmore Public Library, announced the winners of the creative writing competition. In addition, the winners of the pumpkin decoration contest were also crowned. There were creative interpretations of book titles to be seen, for sure.

As the day progressed, visitors were entertained by local musicians and even an interesting story about the old railway was told.

A fun car show took place on Craig Street, not too far from the festival, and the delicious smells of blossoming onions, sausage, funnel cakes and other delicacies wafted through the air.

When mid-afternoon arrived the crowds started to thin out as always and pretty soon the vendors started to dismantle and pack for the night.

The next night I walked through Pensacola Avenue one last time and was looking forward to next year’s festival.
